this fairy tale. by the admission of the vice presidential candidate for the republicans, barack obama has not offered up any new gun legislation. but it cuts to the cultural issues of guys, guns, and god in the heartland in america. i'm joined by montana governor brian schweitzer. good to have you with us. you've heard the story before. how damaging is it and how many holes does it shoot, ironically, into the conversation about the president of the united states being a gun grabber when you have paul ryan saying, well, wait a minute, he hasn't brought forth any new legislation. what do you make of this? >> it was a slip up on his part. the gun advocates have been saying, he's going to take your guns. that's why talk to any gun dealer in america, they have had the best three and a half years they have had since clinton was in the white house when they used to say that about him as well. you can't get ammo anymore because dealers get their boxes of ammo in and people rush in and get it because they have signs and salesman are saying this president is going to take away your guns tomorrow. n

has to be very much on their toes. what i mean by na is president obama and vice president biden, for watching mitt romney and paul reasyan do as they've done throughout this campaign, which is walk away from what they talked about days earlier. we got a great example yesterday. mitt romney goes to "the des moines register" board saying there's nothing in his agenda to restrict a woman's right to choose, which we know after having said in debates he's happy to sign a legislation that ended all abortions. we understand there's a mitt romney you see pop up in public, particularly right now, and there's a mitt romney that believes a series of things that directly contradict what he says currently in public. it's a question for people watching that transformation in front of their eyes. it's hard to trust somebody doing that, and i think it's their right to question whether or not mitt romney is just telling you everything you want to hear right now. his positions are all the same. >> mr. gibbs, it's donny deutsch. >> hey, donny. >> was there a strategic decision before the last deba

. but then there's paul ryan, the republican vice presidential nominee saying president obama is not proposing any attack on gun rights. he's not proposing anymore gun laws. that's true. the only gun-related changes in law we have had from president obama have been expansions of gun rights. but the republicans are not supposed to admit that. not when the nra is running this scary ad campaign saying otherwise. and not when the republicans own candidate has a gun rights record that's so schizophrenic it makes his policies on abortion look like a model of consistency. this is the weapons ban that mitt romney signed as governor. the nra doesn't mind that because they are too busy endorsing this gun banning guy over the other guy who has done no such thing but who happens to be a democrat. so it is remarkable that the vice presidential nominee of the republican party stormed out of this interview in michigan this week. but him storming out does not seem to have been because of the question about cutting taxes or this reporter embarrassing himself, which is the way the campaig
and what should we be watching for? >> the obama people want to lower the expectations and vice versa on the other side. he will say ridiculous things. but it is usually when he gets on the stump committee starts rambling from he starts asking rhetorical questions. but one has two minutes to give his answer, he actually is very good. he connects with people. >> i think that is exactly what is going on here. getting the one other thing that i want both of you to respond to, and that is jack welch. defending his comments when he questioned the veracity of the jobs numbers. lots of questions about their particular last friday. here is what jack welch said. the data collection system is biased and overstated. i'm not sorry for the heated debates that pursuit. i am not the first to question government numbers and hopefully i will not be the last. what did you make of that whole brouhaha. >> i am not inclined to believe that the numbers were that kind of thing. i think that it is very difficult to do. the bigger issue is whether it was a blip or two, a statistical blip, or whether this is g
